2026-27 tax rates

Australia taxes income in slices. You never pay one rate on everything you earn.

The 2% Medicare levy applies on top for most taxpayers. Foreign residents and working holiday makers use different rates and do not get the tax-free threshold. More on the 2026-27 brackets.

Common questions

What changed in the 2026-27 tax year?

The rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 dropped from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026. That is worth up to $268 a year if you earn $45,000 or more. It falls again to 14% on 1 July 2027.

Is superannuation included in my salary?

It depends on how the job was advertised. A '$100,000 package' usually includes super, while '$100,000 plus super' does not. The superannuation guarantee is 12% and it is paid on top of your wage, so the difference between the two is real money. Use the toggle above to switch.

Why is my payslip slightly different?

Employers use ATO withholding tables, which round to the nearest dollar and assume your pay is the same every period. Bonuses, overtime, salary sacrifice and a mid-year pay rise all shift the numbers. Any difference is squared up when you lodge your tax return.

What is the Medicare levy?

It is 2% of your taxable income and it funds public healthcare. Low income earners pay a reduced levy or none at all. A separate Medicare levy surcharge applies to higher earners without private hospital cover.
